Look closely at the dramatic, charred-looking black and deep brown sections dominating the face of this thick-cut timber block. In the science of dendrology, these dark zones are the physical record of a severe biological struggle. When a tree's territory is threatened by weather, external elements, or biological encroachment, it fights back. It floods its internal cellular structure with dense tannins and hardened resins to build an impenetrable wall against the attack. Spruce is not that rich in tennis than oak as an example. In this  case the black film is caused by territorial fight of mold over nutrients in hard times. The black film is witnessing the power lines frozen of a a biological  battlefield. All frozen in time. The striking, high-contrast dark patches you see here are the exact remnants of that century-old territorial defense, perfectly frozen within the wood's geometry.  We stopped beneath 70C with heat treatment. We wanted to preserve a relic to its true nature. Going higher in temperatures might have altered the wood too much. We wanted maximum preservation.

Chemical-Free Preservation

We preserved this biological struggle without masking it in artificial plastics. The piece is entirely epoxy-free, leaving the deep vertical tension cracks and micro-porous surface completely natural and breathable. We applied our deep-cellular thermal modification to eliminate any remaining biological threats. It will not warp or degrade, even in highly fluctuating, modern indoor climates.
