Item 016 is a masterclass in extreme material contrast. One face of this vintage structural block reveals a smooth, flowing grain that radiates a warm, golden-honey hue under architectural lighting. But turn the piece, and you are met with a violently textured, obsidian-black edge. To achieve this stark boundary, we utilized an ancient, Chinese-style manual burning technique. By deliberately exposing the raw edge to intense, controlled fire, we created a deep carbonized crust that frames the pristine interior geometry. It is the exact point where raw botanical beauty meets elemental destruction. 

 

The Science of Cellular Carbonization


This manually burned edge is not just a visual spectacle; it is an application of ancient preservation science. When intense fire hits the timber, it instantly boils away the surface moisture and collapses the outer porous cells. What is left behind is a hardened layer of pure carbon. This carbonized "alligator skin" acts as an impenetrable armor, naturally repelling biological threats and environmental decay without the need for synthetic chemicals. The striking visual duality you see is actually the physical line between biological vulnerability and elemental permanence. 

 

 

The Vintage Relic Within


This block is not freshly harvested lumber; it is a vintage architectural relic. Look closely at the deep fissures within the charred edge, and you will see the remnants of an antique, forged iron nail still embedded in the timber. The fire-curing process honors this history rather than erasing it.
